ATEX Barcode Scanners for Zone 1 and Zone 2

Barcodes are everywhere in a plant: on drums, samples, spare parts, equipment tags and delivery notes. The scanner that reads them in a warehouse is a battery-powered laser or imager, and that is exactly the kind of device a hazardous area excludes. An ATEX barcode scanner is built and certified so that it can be used inside the zone, and this category holds every intrinsically safe scanner we stock, from a simple 1D Bluetooth scanner to combined barcode and RFID readers.

Zone 2 or Zone 1

For Zone 2/22, where an explosive atmosphere is unlikely, the BCS 3600ex-NI and the Bluetooth BCS 3678ex-NI read 1D and 2D codes, postcodes and OCR text, and the 3600ex-NI additionally carries CSA Class I, II, III Division 2 approval for North American sites. For Zone 1/21, the BCS 160ex is available as a cabled handheld and as a Bluetooth version, and the iSCAN201, iSCAN211 and iSCAN211PDF are compact Bluetooth 2D scanners with the battery included. The BCS 370EX adds a radio link for warehouses without Wi-Fi coverage.

Two technologies in one device

When tags and barcodes live side by side, a combined reader saves a second device. The Ident-Ex 01 by ecom reads 1D/2D barcodes as well as tags, and the TagTrans BT combines a 2D imager with a UHF tag reader for Zone 1. Dedicated readers and tags have their own pages: ATEX RFID readers and ATEX tags.

Scanner or smartphone

Many teams scan with the camera of a certified smartphone or tablet, and for occasional use that works. A dedicated scanner is faster, reads damaged and low-contrast codes, and lasts a full shift. The middle ground is a scanning handle: the i.safe MOBILE IS-TH trigger handle and the extended range IS-TH2ER.1 turn an IS530 or IS540 smartphone into a pistol-grip scanner. The cabled barcode scanners connect directly to a certified HMI or ATEX computer.
